Better Late Than Never . . .

It has been a while since things have gotten updated on the Provident Living blog. I guess better late than never. So much to prepare and so little time! We have stayed busy as a committee pushing forward preparedness and really trying to discern what the needs are in our ward and now being the stake preparedness "geek" I am trying to wrap my brain around the task of  motivating the entire stake and meeting those needs. There have been several sleepless nights. This year in the stake as well as in our ward we are touting a "BACK TO BASICS" theme. It felt like it was time to regroup and start at the beginning again. Hopefully you have benefited from our cannery cooking classes that are teaching sisters how to use basic cannery items in everyday cooking, our mega-food storage class held at the end of January where Nicole Earl had a simply amazing PowerPoint showing where we can shove, hide and store all our long-term cannery items. Hopefully you have taken advantage of our awesome group orders too - honey, powdered eggs, 1st aid kits, etc. All basic things we need. There is more on the way too - classes, group orders and yes, blessings for being obedient to this important commandment. I personally feel impressed that we shouldn't put off until tomorrow that which we should do today. Tomorrow may be too late. As I have watched the social turmoil in the Middle East, the recent devastation in Japan, the plummeting economy, rising prices on everything and the volatile weather causing so much crop failure, I feel even more determined to push preparedness for all those that will listen . . . "Who hath ears to hear, let him hear." (Matthew 13:9). It will be wonderful to listen to General Conference!
We are here to help. Let us know how we can meet your preparedness needs!
Yours in preparedness,
~Lisa

Japanese Warning Stones and an Apostle Speaks

In one of my recent stake meetings, as we discussed a preparedness plan for all the wards, one of our High Councilmen told the group of us about this article. It discusses how along the coastlines in Japan there are ancient "warning stones" that give instruction and counsel about what to do in the case of an earthquake and pending tsunami. It is amazing the similarities that we can draw between our modern day prophets, seers and revelators and the purpose of these stones. Read it and think about how this article relates to self-reliance, obedience and preparedness. The article provides an awesome family home evening lesson as well - try giving your kids a stone with an applicable scripture written on it as a reminder of the lessons to be learned from the article. http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/08/limits-to-disaster-memory-even-etched-in-stone/ I would also encourage you to read this talk, The Celestial Nature of Self-Reliance by Marion G. Romney that was recommended to me today. Spiritual food for thought . . . you will be well fed. http://lds.org/ensign/1984/06/the-celestial-nature-of-self-reliance?lang=eng&query=self+reliance+spiritual

Home Canning Corner

I have compiled a quick list (including pictures) of what I consider essential canning equipment to have in your home if you are serious about canning your own produce, fruit and meat. Home canning brings a sense of satisfaction and provides nutritious homemade meals from your pantry. Home canned food is the perfect addition to your 30-day menu and 90-day supply the First Presidency has counseled us to have. This list should make it easier as you start this rewarding endeavor. Good luck and happy canning!
